December 2010: Dzongkha Computing Course for IT Professionals

From 6th to 11th December 2010 the DDC held a training course in Gelephu for IT Officers from the twenty Dzongkhags, IT Trainers from the three private Dzongkha language institutes, and the IT Officer from ILCS.

Topics covered during the one week training course for IT professionals included an Overview of Unicode and OpenType font Technology; Dzongkha and the Unicode Standard; Installation and configuration of Dzongkha on Windows XP, Vista and 7; Installation and configuration of Dzongkha on Linux and Apple OSX; Configuration and use of Dzongkha in Microsoft Office and in OpenOffice; Using MS Word and OpenOffice templates to create pechas; sorting Dzongkha Unicode text, Basics of Creating Dzongkha Websites, configuration of Apache web server and MySQL for Dzongkha; and demonstrations of the use of Dzongkha in Adobe InDesign and of Dzongkha font creation.

 

October 2010: Dzongkha on Mobiles

The DDC Dzongkha fonts and Dzongkha keyboard are now running as a trial on some smart-phones.

As a further development of our Dzongkha tools for Unicode, over the next few years the DDC plans to provide support for Dzongkha on mobile phomes from different manufacturers. This will include phones running the Android, iOS (iPhone), MeeGo (Linux), and Windows Phone 7 operating systems as well as on different tablet computers and e-book readers.

We also hope to provide our Dzongkha dictionaries and Dzongkha learning material in formats that can be installed directly on phones and other mobile devices.

June 2010: Annual Dzongkha Conference

The Annual Dzongkha Conference was held in Paro from 22 June to 26 June 2010. The Conference was inaugurated by The Honorable Chief Justice of Bhutan. The Honorable Minister for Education, Lyonpo Thakur Singh Powdyel, graced the concluding ceremony. The theme for the Conference was ‘Recognition and Usage’.
